Be conscious of the Creator of the Universe

My brothers in Islam,

I call upon myself and each and every one of you to be conscious of God. Be conscious of the Creator of the Universe. Worship Him before death comes to you. For death is something all of us cannot run away from. Whether we are rich or poor, old or young, healthy or sick, all of us will have a taste of death. So, be devoted to Allah. Devote yourself to Him by doing whatever He commands and leave behind all He forbids.

Maasyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,

Each day someone will die. Each day someone will be buried in the grave. And each day a new baby is born. This is the way of life in this world. What leaves us will be replaced by the new. The living will surely die. All of us in this world are like travellers who stop to rest for a while in a town. And very soon we shall continue on our journey to the life after death in the grave. Let us ask ourselves â??what preparations have we made to face life in the graveâ?? Have we made preparations to continue our journey to the Hereafter?

My fellow Muslimin, Allah s.w.t has told us in surah Ali-Imran, ayat 185:

Meaning: Every soul shall have a taste of death. And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be repaid for all your actions. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have succeeded. For wealth and possessions of this world that offer comfort are only deceptions.

This is Allahâ??s promise. Each of us will taste death. Each second, each minute, each hour, each day, we move closer and closer to the life in the grave. But do we know the exact moment we will die? Is is a short while from now? Is it tomorrow? Is it the day after tomorrow? Will our death be sudden and immediate? Or will we die only after we have suffered pain? We do not know. And there is no way we can find out. There is no way we can do anything about it. For death is the business of Allah s.w.t.

The only thing we can do is make preparations for our death. If we were told our water supply in our homes would be cut off at any time, what would we do? Would we just leave things as they are until the water supply is cut off? Or would we immediately store water in as many pails as we can find? We make preparations because we know the water supply would be cut off any time.

My Muslim brothers, such is life in this world. Death can come for us at any moment. We do not know when. Do we do nothing until it comes? Or do we immediately make preparations to face death?

And do we know what the state of the grave or alam barzakh will be like?

Know my brothers that the grave is a place that is dark and narrow. Disbelievers and those who committed many sins will receive graves that are dark and unlit. But the pious who have done many good deeds will receive a grave that is brightly lit. Their graves will be expanded as far as they can see. Even so, their graves will not be as bright as day, but as as bright as night lighted by the full moon.

And know my brothers that every man who enters the grave will be squeezed by the grave. Rasulullah s.a.w used to explain how the grave would contract against the dead body and squeeze it until the bones are crushed. Rasulullah s.a.w was reported to have prayed that Allah lessen the torment of the grave on his daughter Zainab. My dear brothers, if the daughter of Rasulullah, Zainab, could not escape from being crushed by the contracting grave, what about the rest of us who are guilty of sins? Do we think we are able to escape from the torment of the grave? Let us repent this instance. Leave behind all that is sinful. Do acts of charity to rid ourselves of our sins. Let us do this before our death comes all of a sudden. Let us do this before we find ourselves crushed by our graves in the darkness. When this has happened, all our regrets are totally useless.

My brothers in Islam,

The grave can be a garden of paradise for those who are pious. But the grave can also be a hole of Hell for the sinful. Those who committed many sins and little good deeds will find their graves narrowed, their bones crushed and be surrounded by pure darkness. Their only company will be worms, scorpions and insects that sting. The angel of the grave will come with his iron rod and strike their dead bodies until the cries of pain and sorrow are heard by all living things except for humans and jinn. This torment will continue until the Day of Resurrection when all souls will be brought to life for judgement.

My Muslim brothers, life in this world is short. We rarely hear of those who live to be a hundred. But life in the grave is very long – much too long. Imagine – those who died 1000 years ago are still being tormented in the grave because the Day of Resurrection has not yet come.

Do not be fooled by the temporary pleasure of sin that can cause us to suffer in our graves for a thousand years or more. This is not even close to what we will face on the Day of Judgment. So when we feel tired in doing worship, when we find it difficult to pray and fast, remember that the tiredness lasts only a short while. Remember that the acts of worship that we do now will allow us rest peacefully in our graves for a thousand years, or even more. And remember too the rewards of Paradise that we will receive on Judgment Day.

So, do not be lazy or restless when performing acts of worship. And do not be distracted by temporary sinful pleasures. Remember, we are only travellers passing by in this world.

Allah s.w.t says again in surah Al-Anâ??am, ayat 94:
Meaning: â??And behold! You come to us bare and alone as We created you for the first time. And you have left behind you (in the world) all that We have given to you. We see not with you those who speak on your behalf whom you thought to be partners in your affairs. So now all relations between you have been cut off and your pet fancies have left you in sudden difficulty.

Brothers,
I would like to call upon myself and my dear brothers, to instill in us taqwa to Allah s.w.t, by abiding all the He has commanded, by following Islam truthfully, and avoiding all that Allah has forbidden. And by doing all that, we pray to Allah that our taqwa will increase and be strengthened further, amen.

May brothers,
This Monday, the Day of Asyura will dawn upon us. Do we know what is the Day of Asyura? It is the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.

The Day of Asyura is a day of historical significance. Many important events occurred on this day.

It was reported that Prophet Noahâ??s ark came ashore on Mount Judiy on the the Day of Asyura. It was reported also that Prophet Musa a.s was saved by Allah from Pharaoh on this day. And to remind them of this significant event and to glorify the Day of Asyura, the Jews fast on that day.

This tradition of glorifying the Day of Asyura was not limited among the Jews themselves. The Arabs before our Prophetâ??s time also glorified the Day of Asyura.

The Arabs used to change the Kaabahâ??s curtain on this day. They also fasted on the Day of Asyura. In a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim, Rasulullah s.a.w wife, â??Aisyah r.a said:

Which means: The Arabs used to fast on the Day of Asyura before the command to fast during Ramadan was revealed. They also will clothed the Kaabah on this day.

Brothers,
Is it proper for us to celebrate and glorify the Day of Asyura? To answer it, we must refer to Al-Quran and Sunnah.

Allah s.w.t says in surah At-Taubah, verse 36:

Which means: Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, and fight against the idolaters collectively , as they fight against you collectively. But know that Allah is with those who are pious.
It is forbidden to go to war on these four sacred months. It is also encouraged for us to fast many days on these months. The Prophet s.a.w said in a hadith narrated by Ibn Majah:

Which means: Fast in those sacred months.

The four sacred months are Rejab, Zulkaedah, Zulhijjah dan Muharram. And the Day of Asyura occurs on the 10th day of Muharram.

With regards to the virtues of fasting on Day of Asyura, the Prophet s.a.w said in a hadith sahih narrated by Imam Muslim:

Which means: I hope that by fasting on the Day of Asyura, Allah will forgive last yearâ??s sins.

This is reward that awaits those who fast with sincerity on the Day of Asyura. And it was reported in a hadith that before the fast in Ramadan was made obligatory, Rasulullah s.a.w told Muslims to fast on the Day of Asyura.

But fasting is encouraged not just on the Day of Asyura per se. In fact, it is also encouraged to fast on the first 10 days of Muharram, and on the 13, 14 dan 15 days Muharram. Allah s.w.t says in surah Al-Fajr, ayat 2:

Which means: And by the ten nights.

Some scholars of tafsir said that those 10 days belong to the first 10 days of Muharram.

Let us grasp this golden opportunity. We star the new year by showing servitude to Allah. And we hope by doing that, the rest of this year will see us getting closer to Allah.

Brothers,
The command to fast in the month of Ramadan was revealed by Allah on the second year of Hijrah. In the first year, the Prophet s.a.w command Muslims to fast on the Day of Asyura. This is supported be the following hadith narrated Bukhari and Muslim from Ibnu â??Abbas r.a:

Which means: When the Prophet s.a.w reached Medina, he found that the Jews were fasted on the Day of Asyura. He asked them: What is the significance of this day that you all fast in it? They answered: â??This is the day which Allah s.w.t saved Prophet Musa a.s and his people, and the day Allah drowned the Pharaoh and his army. So Prophet Musa a.s fasted on this day as a sign of gratefulness to Allah.â? The Prophet s.a.w said again: â??We have more rights on Prophet Musa a.s then you allâ?. So he fasted on the day of Asyura, and he commanded Muslims to do likewise.

In the hadith that I recited just now, it is clear that Rasulullah s.a.w did not feel shy to ask from other people about certain matter, event from the Jews. And the Prophet s.a.w did not shy from incorporating what is good in other community to Islam. There are two lessons that can be learned from.

First: We must push aside any feelings of embarrassment and shyness when we are studying and gleaning knowledge from other communities, regardless of race and religion.

Allah s.w.t gives knowledge to whomever He wishes, regardless of race and religion. So one community cannot look down on others. Each community has its own strength and weaknesses. WE learn from strength of other communities to lessen the weaknesses in our community. And if we do this, the racial gap can be minimized.

The second lesson is that we cannot be stingy from sharing knowledge to others, even though they are not of the same race or religion. The Jews themselves did not withhold information from our Prophet s.a.w on their reason for fasting on the Day of Asyura.

Thus, we are required to share with others, especially the non-Muslims, the beauty, purity and simplicity of Islam. This exchange of information will give rise to a worthwhile conclusion. The person either embraces Islam, or they will understand our religion, like we with theirs.

In the end, the community will live together harmoniously because the understanding between the different religions already existed.

These are the two lessons that can be learnt from the story on the Day of Asyura. We cannot shy away from asking for knowledge, and we must not refrain from sharing with others about Islam.

May Allah s.w.t accept our fast on the Day of Asyura, amen.

Friday Khutbah (26 Jan 2007): Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil: Combining The Foundation and the Methodology

All praise is due to Allah the Lord of the worlds. Peace and blessings of Allah to His Messenger Muhammad, his family and followers until the end of the World.

The foundation

In Islam enjoining good and forbidding evil is one of the duties of a Muslim. Allah said:

You [true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Sunnah (legal ways, etc.)] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Maâ??ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden), and you believe in Allah. And had the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) believed, it would have been better for them; among them are some who have faith, but most of them are Al-Fasiqun (disobedient to Allah – and rebellious against Allah’s Command).

Al Imran (3) 110[1]

In another verse,

Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Maâ??ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful.

Al Imrân (03) Verse 104.

In his Tafsir, Ibn Kathir[2] said: Allah said, (Let there arise out of you a group of people) that calls to righteousness, enjoins all that is good and forbids evil in the manner Allah commanded, (And it is they who are the successful.) Ad-Dahhak[3] said, “They are a special group of the Companions and a special group of those after them, that is those who perform Jihad and the scholars.” The objective of this Ayah is that there should be a segment of this Muslim Ummah fulfilling this task, even though it is also an obligation on every member of this Ummah, each according to his ability Tafsir Ibn Kathir Vol 2 Page 232 (Darussalam English Translation)

The Consequences

This duty is so important such that neglecting on acting upon it is equated with the collective punishment of Allah upon the people, whether they are good or bad if those who are good amongst them neglect to implement it. Imam Bukhari collected a hadeeth narrated By Zainab bint Jahsh:

The Prophet got up from his sleep with a flushed red face and said, “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. Woe to the Arabs, from the Great evil that is nearly approaching them. Today a gap has been made in the wall of Gog and Magog like this.” (Sufyan illustrated by this forming the number 90 or 100 with his fingers.) It was asked, “Shall we be destroyed though there are righteous people among us?” The Prophet said, “Yes, if evil increased.”

Vol 9, Book 88. Book of Afflictions and the end of the world. Hadeeth number 181[4]

And its fulfillment is connected to our safety:

O you who believe! Take care of your ownselves, [do righteous deeds, fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)]. If you follow the right guidance and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden) no hurt can come to you from those who are in error. The return of you all is to Allah, then He will inform you about (all) that which you used to do.

Al Maaidah (5): 105

â?¦and Allah will grant us power in the land:

Those (Muslim rulers) who, if We give them power in the land, (they) order for Iqamat-as-Salat. [i.e. to perform the five compulsory congregational Salat (prayers) (the males in mosques)], to pay the Zakat and they enjoin Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism and all that Islam has forbidden) [i.e. they make the Qur’an as the law of their country in all the spheres of life]. And with Allah rests the end of (all) matters (of creatures).

Al Hajj (22): 41

The Methodology

The methodology of enjoining good and forbidding evil is enshrined in a hadeeth collected by Imam Muslim:

It is narrated on the authority of Tariq b. Shihab: It was Marwan who initiated (the practice) of delivering khutbah (address) before the prayer on the ‘Id day. A man stood up and said: Prayer should precede khutbah. He (Marwan) remarked, This (practice) has been done away with. Upon this Abu Sa’id remarked: This man has performed (his duty) laid on him. I heard the Messenger of Allah as saying: He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.

Book 1 Faith. Hadeeth No. 79

In another narration:

It is narrated on the authority ‘Abdullah b. Mas’ud that the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) observed: Never a Prophet had been sent before me by Allah towards his nation who had not among his people (his) disciples and companions who followed his ways and obeyed his command. Then there came after them their successors who said whatever they did not practise, and practised whatever they were not commanded to do. He who strove against them with his hand was a believer: he who strove against them with his tongue was a believer, and he who strove against them with his heart was a believer and beyond that there is no faith even to the extent of a mustard seed.

Sahih Muslim. Book 1. Faith. Hadith 0081.

It is done according to position and authority

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar had said, “I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, ‘All of you are guardians and responsible for your wards and the things under your care. The Imam (i.e. ruler) is the guardian of his subjects and is responsible for them and a man is the guardian of his family and is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husband’s house and is responsible for it. A servant is the guardian of his master’s belongings and is responsible for them.’ I thought that he also said, ‘A man is the guardian of his father’s property and is responsible for it. All of you are guardians and responsible for your wards and the things under your care.”

Implementing the Methodology with Wisdom

Enjoining good and forbidding evil is essentially inviting people to Allah. In this regard, Allah said in the Qurâ??an:

Invite (mankind, O Muhammad) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur’an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.

Surah/Chapter 016 – An-Nahl. Verse 125.

Implementing with wisdom means we must make sure according to the best of our abilities that when we enjoin good or forbid evil, the end result would be beneficial. In other words a greater good should be achieved or a greater evil is prevented.

There are many circumstances when we want to do good yet the result is harm. One example is praying the Tahajjud prayer but neglecting to pray the Fajr prayer due to exhaustion. One does not do the voluntary acts of worship in lieu of the Waajib. Because of this one does not pray the Sunnah prayer once the Iqaamah has been announced.

Likewise there are also circumtances where we want to avert harm yet the result is greater harm. To illustrate this point, we will mention the hadeeth narrated by Anas bin Malik in Sahih Muslim:

A Bedouin came and passed urine in one corner of the mosque. The people shouted at him but the Prophet stopped them till he finished urinating. The Prophet ordered them to spill a bucket of water over that place and they did so.

Vol 1 Book 4 Ablutions Hadeeth no. 234

Had the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam did not prevent the people from stopping the man from urinating, that man would have had splashed his urine all over the place, or in peopleâ??s clothings instead of confining it only to the place where he is urinating. Further, abruptly stopping the urination process could have other bad effects to a personâ??s health. Thus a greater harm was prevented by allowing some lesser harm to occur.

Ask Allahâ??s help

There is a Sunnah prayer called Istikhaara prayer. One is supposed to perform this prayer if he/she is going to decide on something.

Finally enjoining good and forbidding evil should be done for the sake of Allah alone. Further it should be done according to the way of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.

We ask Allah that if we perform this obligation, we will be from those who are rewarded and be those whose scale of good deeds in the Judgment Day is heavy.

Narrated By ‘Amr bin Al-‘As: That he heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “If a judge gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is correct (i.e. agrees with Allah and His Apostle’s verdict) he will receive a double reward, and if he gives a verdict according to the best of his knowledge and his verdict is wrong, (i.e. against that of Allah and His Apostle) even then he will get a reward.”

Summary Muslims are required to enjoin good and forbid evil. Its implementation and neglect are linked to our success and failure respectively. Its effectuation is done with wisdom and according to oneâ??s authority. Finally it is Allah who grants success.

Some Etiquettes of Jumu’ah: Having a Proper Wudoo’ & Being Silent

From the regulations regarding Jumu’ah, the Sunnah and the manners of Jumu’ah is that you :

  1. Make ghusl as it is waajib upon everyone who has reached the age of puberty.
  2. Wear the best of your clothing.
  3. Using oil
  4. Walking to the Jumua’h is better than riding if there is no difficulty in your walking.
  5. Go early to the place where Jumua’h is going to be held.
  6. Making Tahayatull Masjid
  7. Reading Suratul Kahf
  8. Sending peace and prayers upon Muhammad ibn Abdulah  sallallahu alayhe was salam
  9. Not going over the necks of people
  10. Total and complete silence while listening to the  khutbah
  11. Using the time during Jumu’ah when du’aa  is said to be answered to make du’aa

The actions of Jumu’ah are of three types :

  1. The actions you do before Jumu’ah – ghusl, wearing your best clothing, using an oil, being early
  2. The actions you do after the salaah – making du’aa at the proper time ( the last hour before the setting of the sun )
  3. The actions you do before the salaah  – reading suratul Kahf , sending prayers and peace upon the Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam and like this

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhe was salaam said al Jumu’ah is the best of the days and is the greatest of the days with Allah than Eid al Adha or the day of Fitr. It had five qualities. Allah created Adam on the day of Jumu’ah and Allah made Adam come down to earth upon that day. Also Allah caused Adam to die at that time. And in this hour is that no servant asks Allah for something except that Allah will give it to him as long as he doesnt ask for that which is haraam. And on friday the hour will be established. And there is no angel that is close, there is no heaven, no earth, no wind, no mountain, no ocean except that is fearful on yawm al Jumu’ah. It is fearful on the day of friday for fear that Kiyamah will be established on that day.

The Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam said “The best of your days is yawmul Jumu’ah. On that day Adam was created. And on that day the soul was blown into him. And on that day the people will fall out before the kiyamah. Send a lot of prayers upon me because your prayers come to me. “And they said O RasoolAllah, How can our prayers come to you when you have become dust or bones? He answered “Allah has forbidden the earth from eating the Prophets of Allah.”

Abu Hurairah radiallahu anhu narrates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam said “Friday prayer to Friday prayer is an expiation of ones sins he commits between those two fridays as long as he doesnt fall into the Major sins.”

Aus ibn Aus said , I heard the Prophet sallalahu alayhe was salaam say “Whoever makes Ghusl  on the day of Jumu’ah and comes early and walks to Jumu’ah , comes close to the imam , and does not take his attention from the  imam, he will have for every step he took a reward for a full year of fasting and standing in prayer. [ Abi Dawud ]

The fact of  listening and being silent during the khutbah

Abu Hurairah radiallahu anhu said that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe said “If you were to say to your companion sitting beside you on the day of Friday when the Imam is giving the Khutbah that he should be quiet , then you have done that which wipes away the reward of Jumu’ah.”

Ubay ibn Kab radiallahu anhu narrates that The Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam recited surah at Tabarak while he was standing and reminding us of the days of Allah, while Abu Darda or Abu Darr touched me , trying to get my attention. He asked a question regarding Ilm, “When was this surah revealed? I have not heard it until this time”. I pointed to him to be quiet. When the salaat was over he said , “I asked you when was this surah revealed and you didnt tell me”. I said , You will have no reward for you salaah today because you have done that which wipes it away. So he went to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhe was salaam and mentioned to him what was said “Ubay has told the truth.”

Another narration that speaks about this issue is one regarding Abdullah ibn Masud radiallahu anhu and he was asking a question also. Ibn Masud sat by Ubay ibn Kab and he asked him something or talked to him about something. Ubay didnt speak to him at all. Ibn Masud thought that he had some problem with him. So when the Prophet sallalahu alayhe was salama finished the salaat , Ibn Masud said, “Ya Ubay, what stopped you from responding to me?” Ubay replied, “its as if you didnt even make Jumu’ah with us because you were talking”. Ibn Masud asked RasoolAllah sallallahu alayhe was salaam , and mentioned what was said. The Messenger of Allah said “and obey Ubay.”

So this is regarding the matter of being silent when the Imam is giving a Khutbah of Jumu’ah.

End of First Part Khutbah

Jaabir radiallahu anhu said that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam said , “No person makes a ghusl properly on yawm al Jumu’ah and purifies himself in the best way , uses some oil, and he leaves his home not seperating between two , then he prays what has been written for him to pray, then he is silent if the imam talks, except that it will be forgiven for him the sins that he has committed between that friday and the next friday.”

So this speaks about cleanliness, being early , and being quiet. Abu Hurairah relates from the Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam,” Allah misled away from the day of Jumu’ah those who were before us. The Yahud took Saturday and the Christians took Sunday. And there will be forever followers behind us in  this issue until the Day of Judgement. We are the last of the people of the dunyah, and the first of those to be judged before the rest  of the creation.

Jabir radiallahu anhu narrated that an individual entered into the masjid while the Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam was giving a khutbah. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam stopped his Khutbah and said to him “Have you prayed?” He said no, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhe was salaam said, “Stand up and pray two rakaat.”  So this is speaking about Tahayatul Masjid, stand up and pray two rakaat.

Another hadeeth, and we have mentioned some of it, but this is in different wording. “There is no person who purifies himself on the day of Jumu’ah as he has been ordered , and he leaves his house and comes to salaatul Jumu’ah and he is quiet until salaat is finished except there is expiation for that which has preceded this jumu’ah.”

Some may say that this is an issue that we know. Some may say that this is an issue that we dont need to be reminded of. But we have been told in the Quran to remind them , for the reminder benefits the believer. And as has been shown through experience, many times people forget these hadeeth and these narrations and we forget that Jumu’ah is from the great symbols of Allah and it must have some kind of glorification in our hearts because this is from the taqwa, from the fear of Allah subhana wa ta’alaa. It is an honourable day, it is a great day, it is a day full of virtues and blessings for the one who observes it – as he should observe it , sticking to the book of Allah tabaraka wa ta’alaa and the Sunnah of the Messenger sallallahu alayhe was salaam.

Friday Khutbah (12-Jan-2007): Light & Darkness

“The person who takes a bath then comes to the group prayer (Friday Jummah/Khutbah), then offers the prayer that was destined for him, and then keeps silent till the Imam finishes the sermon, and then prays along with him, his sins between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven, and even of three days more” (Reported in Sahih Muslim, with similar hadiths in Abu Dawood,Ibn Majah, and Ahmad bin Hanbal).

â??When it is a Friday, the Angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jummah prayer) the Angels fold their papers and listen to the Khutba. (Narrated in Bukhari and Muslim)

â??Whosoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light illuminated for him between the two Fridaysâ? (Narrated by Nasaâ??i Bayhaqi & others)

Anyway….Subhan Allah the Khutbah today, as always was very good..very informative. The Imam talked about the concept of light and darkness (in the Qur’an), and how it applies to our lives as Muslims, both in this dunya, and in the Hereafter. In Surat An-Nur it’s described:

“…Light upon Light! Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah sets forth parables for mankind, and Allah is All-Knower of Everything (24:35).”

“Or [the state of a disbeliever] is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed with waves topped by waves, topped by dark clouds, (layers of) darkness upon darkness: if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light (24:40).”

This concept of light and darkness can be viewed as Heaven and Hell, it can be viewed as guidance and misguidance, or Success with Allah verses ‘success’ with shaytan. There are many ways to look at it, but the bottom line for us as Muslims, is to strive in Allah’s Cause, and reach for the light. How unlucky we’d be if we were (or are) among those who are in the darkness. SO, what can we do to stay away from this darkness? the Imam said foremost: let not shaytan influence you. You can choose to be amongst those who Iblis influences, or you can be amongst those who follow the Word of Allah [swt]:

“(Iblis) said: “By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all, Except Your chosen slaves amongst them (i.e. faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism) (38:82-83)”

“(Iblis) said: “See this one whom You have honoured above me, if You give me respite to the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seize and mislead his offspring (by sending them astray) all but a few! (17:62)”

“(Iblis) said: “Because you have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. not be dutiful to Allah Ta’aala) (7:16-17).”

Allah has a plan for us all, and if we are amongst those chosen to stay in the Path of Allah, then that’s what will happen. This doesn’t mean that we don’t have to work for it though, because shaytan still has the power to influence those who forget about Allah. Anything associated with Shaytan is definitely NOT good for us as Muslims. If we associate ourselves with Haraam things or situations, then we are associating ourselves with shaytan…if we associate ourselves with the disbelievers, then we are associating ourselves with shaytan. The Qur’an clearly tells us to stay away from these things and these types of people, yet we still (not excluding myself) continue on in this manner. I find this ayat to be EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!::

“O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliya (friends, protectors, helpers) they are but Auliya of each other. And if any amongst you take them (as Auliya), then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those pople who are the Zalimun (5:51).”

It is stated SO clearly, that I find it impossible to disregard the message. I know how hard it is to understand or apply it to our lives (especially since many of us live in a place dominated by non-Muslims). I feel it personally, especially since my own blood family is Christian. My mother, who converted from Christianity, has a relgious Christian family. My own half brother and half sister are Christians (my grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, neices, etc.) I love them very much, and it’s hard to know that I cannot change their beliefs. Also, my friends….the majority of them are non-Muslims, so what am I to do in that situation? I don’t think I can completely disregard all of them, but I can just try my best to keep these relationships very basic. What is most important to me, is what Allah Commands, and He knows what is best for all of us. I guess the message is not to let this life get the best of you. Ask Allah to always make you remember Him, and to remind you of what your purpose in this life is (that is to worship Him Alone, and to spread the Word of Islam in a manner that pleases Allah). Once again, easier said than done, but as Muslims, I think it’s so important that we stay close together–this way we’re not influenced by the Mushrikun, and that we become more knowledgeable, and worship Allah in a more perfect manner. If our Ummah was united, I think it would be easier to apply the teachings of Islam to our lives, because we would only be surrounded by other Muslims who would be trying to do the same thing. It’s hard…but of course, Allah did not intend that we lead an easy life, and enter Paradise just like that. This is our calling..our Jihad: to live life in accordance to the teachings of Islam, no matter how many obstacles stand in our way, and no matter how impossible it may seem. Also, we can’t just pick and choose the parts that we feel apply to our lives. If we submit ourselves as Muslims, we have to submit completely and whole heartedly–submit our entire self: mind, body and soul, and live our lives exactly how Allah has prescribed for us. It may take time to do that, but we should all be on that road, attempting to change our lives–tweak out the bad and find goodness in Islam and Allah’s Straight Path Insha Allah.
